Gymnacranthera ocellata R.T.A.Schouten, Blumea 31 (1986)
Latin for the numerous small eye-like lenticels on the twigs.
Description
Mid-canopy tree up to 35 m tall and 50 cm dbh. Stem with red sap. Stipules
absent. Leaves alternate, simple, penni-veined, venation inconspicuous, whitish
below, glabrous. Flowers ca. 2 mm diameter, yellow-orange, placed in panicles.
Fruits ca. 20 mm long, orange-red, fleshy, glabrous, dehiscent capsule. Seeds
with completely divided yellow-orange aril.
Ecology
In undisturbed to slightly disturbed (open) sites in mixed dipterocarp,
keranga, coastal and sub-montane forests up to 1300 m altitude. Usually on
hillsides and ridges with poor sandy to ultrabasic soils. In secondary forests
usually present as a pre-disturbance remnant.
