Mallotus subpeltatus (Blume) Műll.Arg.

Small trees up to ca. 12 m tall and 10 cm dbh, reproductive from 5 m tall and 2 cm dbh. Twigs solid, sparsely to densely hairy (short simple hairs). Stipules ovate to narrowly ovate, with serrate margin, early-caducous, erect, often crowded at twig apex, 4-8 mm long by 1.5-3 mm wide. Petioles sparsely hairy, up to ca. 11 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate to elliptic, peltate or not, 16.5-30 cm long by 6.5-11.5 cm wide, length/width-ratio 2.53-3.83; secondary veins 5-7, not ending in the margin (fading to looping); leaf base rounded to obtuse to sometimes slightly cordate, peltate margin length (when present) 0.1-0.3 cm; leaf margin without glands; leaf upper surface glabrous; leaf lower surface hairy on veins, with elongate hair tuft domatia in axils of secondary veins. Staminate inflorescences not branched; with one flower per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences not branched, with only one terminal fruit developing; fruits 16-20 mm wide, 3-locular, with many long spines.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 500 m altitude. A shade tolerant species found in the forest understorey.

Distribution: Birma, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and Borneo. In Borneo collected in Sabah, West- and East-Kalimantan.
