Mallotus stipularis Airy Shaw Small trees up to ca. 17 m tall and 15 cm dbh, reproductive from 3 m tall and 2 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (short and long simple hairs). Stipules narrowly ovate, early-caducous to semi-persistent, erect, 8-15 mm long by 2-4 mm wide, usually colouring black when dried. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 1.5 cm long. Leaves opposite, one of each pair scale-like reduced (possible formed by two fused stipules), obovate, 12-23 cm long by 3.5-9 cm wide; length/width-ratio 2.5-3.78; secondary veins 11-14, not ending in the margin to apically ending in the margin; leaf base obtuse, slightly oblique; leaf margin usually with glands, often apically serrate; leaf upper surface hairy on veins; leaf lower surface hairy, usually with hair tuft domatia in axils of secondary veins. Staminate inflorescences not branched to branched; with one flower per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences not branched; fruits 10-14 mm wide, 3-locular, with many short spines. Ecology: Collected up to ca. 1000 m altitude. A shade tolerant forest understorey species, usually found in primary forest, but also present in closed secondary forests. Distribution: Peninsular Thailand, Sumatra and Borneo. In Borneo it has been collected in Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah, West- and East-Kalimantan. |
