Mallotus paniculatus (Lam.) Műll.Arg.

Small trees up to ca. 20 m tall and 15 cm dbh, reproductive from 1 m tall and 2 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (short, creamish-coloured, mainly tufted and stellate hairs). Stipules triangular, early-caducous to semi-persistent, erect, ca. 0.5 mm long by 0.5 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 18 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate to elliptic, rarely 3-cusped, rarely slightly peltate, 7.5-17 cm long by 4.5-13 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.27-2.36; secondary veins 5-9, not ending in the margin (looping); leaf base usually attenuate to sometimes rounded, pelate margin length (when present) 0.2-0.5 cm; leaf margin with glands, sometimes serrate; leaf upper surface glabrous, with 2 basal nectary glands directly next to petiole insertion, apical nectary glands present or absent; leaf lower surface densely hairy, glaucous, densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margins. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 5-8 mm wide, 3-locular, with several long thick spines.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 1700 m altitude. An early successional species, usually found in severly disturbed sites, like grasslands and scrub vegetation. Very rare in undisturbed forest.

Distribution: From South China and India to New Guinea and Australia. In Borneo collected throughout the island.
