Mallotus macrostachyus (Miq.) Műll.Arg.

Shrub to small tree up to ca. 13 m tall and 20 cm dbh, reproductive from 2 m tall and 3 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (mostly stellate hairs). Stipules triangular, early-caducous to semi-persistent, erect, 2-6 mm long by 1-2 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 29 cm long. Leaves alternate, broadly ovate, sometimes slightly peltate, rarely 3-cusped, 12-31 cm long by 8.5-21 cm wide, length/width-ratio 0.85-1.65; secondary veins 6-7, ending in the margin; leaf base broadly rounded to cordate, peltate margin length (when present) 0.1-0.3 cm, usually basal leaf margin recurved upwards; leaf margin with glands, slightly serrate; leaf upper surface hairy on veins, with 2 basal nectary glands next to the petiole insertion (sometimes covered by upcurled basal leaf margin), apical nectaries present; leaf lower surface densely hairy, glaucous, numerously gland dotted, with hair tuft domatia in the vein axils. Often staminate and pistillate flowers mixed on one inflorescence. (monoecious). Staminate inflorescences usually branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences usually not branched; fruits 10-15 mm wide, 3-locular, many short spines hidden between densely wooly indument.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 1000 m altitude. An early successional species, preferring heavily disturbed sites such as grasslands and scrub. Only found in disturbed sites in primary forest.

Distribution: Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo. In Borneo is has been collected throughout the island.
