Mallotus lackeyi Elmer

Shrubs to small trees up to 15 m tall and 15 cm dbh, reproductive from 2 m tall and 1 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (mostly stellate and tufted hairs). Stipules narrowly triangular, early-caducous to semi-persistent, erect, often placed a few mm above leaf insertion, 5-15 mm long by 1-3 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 24 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate, ovate, 15.5-32 cm long by 11-21 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.41-2; secondary veins 6-10, usually ending in the margin; leaf base rounded, peltate margin length 2-4 cm; leaf margin with glands, usually (slightly) serrate; leaf upper surface hairy on veins and sometimes lamina, sparsely to numerously gland dotted, with 2-4 basal nectary glands on basal veins, some distance from the petiole insertion, sometimes also with apical nectary glands; leaf lower surface densely hairy, sparsely to numerously gland dotted, rarely with hair tuft domatia in vein axils. Staminate inflorescences not branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences not branched; fruits 10-13 cm wide, 3-locular, with many short spines.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 1400 m altitude. A relatively shade-tolerant successional species, mainly found in the forest understorey along rivers and streams. Prefers slightly disturbed or open sites.

Distribution: Borneo and the Philippines. In Borneo it has been collected in Sarawak, Sabah, East- and South-Kalimantan.
