Mallotus korthalsii Műll.Arg.

Small trees to trees up to ca. 27 m tall and 30 cm dbh, reproductive from 1 m tall and 2 cm dbh. Twigs solid, usually hairy (short simple, tufted and stellate hairs). Stipules triangular, early-caducous, erect, 1-2 mm long by 0.5-1 mm wide. Petioles usually hairy, petioles of opposite leave pairs differing in length, large petioles up to ca. 7.5 cm long, petiole of opposite small leaf up to ca. 3 cm long. Leaves opposite, one of each pair smaller but similar in shape; large leaf ovate to elliptic, 9-29 cm long by 3-14 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.64-3.11; secondary veins 3-6, ending in the margin, second pair of secondary veins arising ca. halfway or higher on the leaf lamina; leaf base obtuse, to slightly cordate; leaf margin with glands, apically usually serrate; leaf upper surface glabrous to hairy on veins, with 2-10 basal nectary glands on tertiary veins, sometimes also with apical nectary glands; leaf lower surface glabrous to hairy, usually with hair-tuft domatia in vein axils, densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences not branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences not branched; fruits 10-13 mm wide, 3-locular, with many short spines.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 800 m altitude. A relatively shade tolerant species found in the understorey of primary and secondary forests. Prefers slightly disturbed sites.

Distribution: Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and the Philippines. In Borneo collected in Sarawak, Sabah, West-, Central-, and East-Kalimantan.
