Mallotus brachythyrsus Merr.

Shrub up to ca. 2 m tall and 2 cm dbh, reproductive from 1 m tall. Twigs solid, glabrous to hairy (short simple and tufted hairs). Stipules narrowly triangular, early caduceus to semi-persistent, erect, two stipules for each opposite leaf pair, surrounding the twigs completely, 8-10 mm long by 1-2 mm wide. Petioles glabrous to hairy, up to ca. 0.5 cm long. Leaves opposite, one of each pair scale-like (possibly two fused stipules); large leaf slightly obovate, 15-19.5 cm long by 4-7 cm wide, length/width-ratio 2.79-4.33; secondary veins 10-15, not ending in the margin (looping to fading); leaf base usually slightly cordate, usually oblique; leaf margin with glands, serrate; leaf upper surface glabrous, with 2-4 rather large basal nectary glands on basal veins near petiole insertion, with or without apical marginal nectary glands, usually numerously gland dotted; leaf lower surface glabrous to hairy, with or without hair tuft domatia in vein axils, not or sparsely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences not branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences not branched; fruits ca. 12 mm wide, 3-locular, with many short spines.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 500 m altitude. Probably a shade tolerant forest understorey species.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Sarawak and Central-Kalimantan.
