. Macaranga velutiniflora S.J. Davies

Small trees up to ca. 15 m tall and 15 cm dbh, reproductive from 8 m tall and 9 cm dbh. Twigs hollow, ant inhabited, glabrous, with small ant openings (ca. 1 mm diameter). Stipules broadly ovate, semi-persistent, recurved, (almost) completely surrounding the twigs, 11-12 mm long by 13-15 cm wide. Petioles glabrous, up to ca. 27 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate, 3-lobed, 29-60 cm long by 24.5-45 cm wide, length/width-ratio ca. 1.17; secondary veins 12-16, ending in the margin; central lobes 8-15 cm long by 13-18 cm wide, lateral lobes 2-5 cm long; leaf base broadly rounded to truncate, peltate margin length 6-9 cm; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface glabrous; leaf lower surface glabrous, sparsely to numerously gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 12-14 mm wide, (4-)5(-6)-locular, one glandular patch on each carpel wall, developing into long horn-like appendages.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 900m altitude. An early successional species growing in disturbed sites in primary forest and in secondary forests.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Sarawak and West-Kalimantan.

Note: Possibly a synonym of Macaranga petanostyla Airy Shaw, from which it only differs by its more hairy inflorescences and its bracteole shape.
