Twigs hollow, ant inhabited, glabrous to hairy (short simple hairs), with small ant openings (ca. 1 mm diameter). Stipules broadly ovate, usually early caduceus, recurved, (almost) completely surrounding the twigs, 6-8 mm long by 6-9 mm wide. Petioles hairy, up to ca. 20 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate, 3-lobed to rarely not lobed, 17-24 cm long by 14-21 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.11-1.24; secondary veins 11-17, ending in the margin; central lobes 7-12 cm long by 10-14 cm wide, lateral lobes 0.5-3 cm long; leaf base broadly rounded, peltate margin length 1.2-3.3 cm; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface glabrous to hairy on veins; leaf lower surface often densely hairy (velvety), glaucous or not, numerously gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 10-11 mm wide, 4(-5)-locular, one glandular patch per carpel wall. Ecology: Collected up to ca. 400 m altitude. An early successional species, growing in disturbed sites in primary forest and in secondary forests. Distribution: Sumatra and Borneo. In Borneo collected throughout the island. Note: Most likely a synonym of Macaranga bancana (Miq.) Műll.Arg., of which it forms the most hairy variant (see also notes under M. bancana). |
