Macaranga trichocarpa (Reichb. & Zoll.) Műll.Arg. Shrub up to ca. 10 m tall and 10 cm dbh, reproductive from 1 m tall and 1.5 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (short simple hairs). Stipules ovate to triangular to linear, early-caducous to semi-persistent, erect, not surrounding the twigs completely, 2-12 mm long by 1-2 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 13 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate, rarely 3-cusped (up to 1 cm long), 9-19 cm long by 5-15 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.27-1.85; secondary veins 8-10, ending in the margin; leaf base rounded to cordate to cuneate; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface densely hairy, usually feeling sandpaper-like, usually with 2 basal nectary glands directly next to petiole insertion; leaf lower surface densely hairy, usually glaucous, numerously to densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with fimbriate margins. Pistillate inflorescences not branched, with large leaf like bracteoles; fruits 9-12 mm wide, 2-locular, densely covered with spines. Ecology: Collected up to ca. 600 m altitude. An early successional species that occurs mainly in heavily degraded forests or in scrub vegetations, but also present in disturbed sites in primary forests and in secondary forests. Often forming dense pure stands. Distribution: From Birma and Indochina south to Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. In Borneo collected throughout the island.
