Macaranga strigosissima Airy Shaw

Small trees up to ca. 13 m tall and 17 cm dbh, reproductive from 6 m tall and 10 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (long and short simple hairs). Stipules needle-like, crowded at twig apex, semi-persistent, erect, not surrounding the twigs completely, 5-12 mm long by 0.5-1.5 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 8 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate, rarely peltate, 14-21 cm long by 4.5-12.5 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.6-3.11; secondary veins 8-11, not ending in the margin (looping); leaf base (rounded to) cordate-auriculate, peltate margin length (when present) 0.2 cm; leaf margin without glands; leaf upper surface hairy, with 2 slightly raised basal nectary glands on basal veins, some distance from petiole insertion; leaf lower surface hairy, with roof-like domatia in vein axils, sparsely to densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences not branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margins. Pistillate inflorescences not branched, with one terminal fruit only, enclosed by enlarged, leaf-like bracteoles; fruits 13-15 mm wide, 2-locular, without spines.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 300 m altitude. A typical shade-tolerant forest understorey species, found in primary forest, but also in closed secondary forests.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Sarawak and Sabah.
