Macaranga sarcocarpa Airy Shaw

Small trees up to ca. 15 m tall and 10 cm dbh, reproductive from 4 m tall and 3 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (short simple hairs), glaucous or not. Stipules ovate, early-caducous, erect to spreading, not surrounding the twigs completely, ca. 15 mm long by 6 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 16 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate, peltate, 20.5-22 cm long by ca. 18 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.14-1.22; secondary veins 8-9, ending in the margin; leaf base broadly rounded, peltate leaf margin 5-5.5 cm; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface strongly bullate, glabrous to hairy on veins; leaf lower surface densely hairy, glaucous or not, densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences not seen. Pistillate inflorescences not branched; fruits ca. 15 mm diameter, without spines.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 100 m altitude. An early succesional species, growing in disturbed sites in primary forest and in secondary forests.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Brunei and Sarawak.
