Macaranga rarispina Whitmore Small trees up to ca. 13 m tall and 27 cm dbh, reproductive from 4 m tall and 4 cm dbh. Twigs solid, usually glabrous. Stipules needle-like, crowded at twig apex, semi-persistent, not surrounding the twigs completely, 8-15 mm long by 1-2 mm wide. Petioles glabrous, up to ca. 11 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate to elliptic, 18-27 cm long by 4.5-12 cm wide, length/width-ratio 2.08-4.44; secondary veins 13-15, not ending in the margin (looping); leaf base slightly cordate to auriculate; leaf margin with inconspicuous glands; leaf upper surface glabrous, with 2-4 basal nectary glands directly next to petiole insertion; leaf lower surface usually glabrous, not or rarely sparsely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences not branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margins. Pistillate inflorescences not branched; fruits 18-20 mm wide, 2-locular, with few spines. Ecology: Collected up to ca. 200 m altitude. A typical shade-tolerant forest understorey species. Most common in primary forests, but also present in closed secondary forests. Distribution: Endemic to Borneo, where it has been collected in Sarawak, Sabah, West-, Central-- and East-Kalimantan. |
