Macaranga puncticulata Gage. Small trees up to ca. 15 m tall and 20 cm dbh, reproductive from 3 m tall and 5 cm dbh. Twigs solid to hollow (ant inhabited), strongly swollen between nodes when hollow, glabrous to hairy (short simple hairs), glaucous or not, ant openings large (ca. 2 mm diameter). Stipules ovate, usually early-caducous, erect, not surrounding the twigs completely, 4-12 mm long by 2-5 mm wide. Petioles glabrous to hairy, up to ca. 20 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate, peltate, 8-20 cm long by 5.5-12.5 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.22-2; secondary veins 5-9, ending in the margin; leaf base rounded to truncate (to cordate), peltate margin length 0.9-3.1 cm; margin with glands; leaf upper surface glabrous; leaf lower surface glabrous to hairy, glaucous or not, numerously to densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire to fimbriate margin. Pistillate inflorescences not branched; fruits 8-15 mm wide, 3-4-locular, more or less globose, completely covered with glands. Ecology: Collected up to ca. 100 m altitude. A relatively shade tolerant early successional species, mainly restricted to swamps. Distribution: Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. In Borneo collected throughout the island. |
