Macaranga pruinosa (Miq.) Műll.Arg. (Small) tree up to ca. 25 m tall and 30 cm dbh, reproductive from 5 m tall and 5 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (short simple hairs). Stipules broadly ovate, semi-persistent, apex curled upward and inward, forming a sac-like structure, not surrounding the twigs completely, 3-15 mm long by 5-15 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 25 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate, 3-lobed, 7.5-24 cm long by 8-30 cm wide, length/width-ratio 0.83-0.97; secondary veins 6-11, ending in the margin; central lobes 3-9 cm long by 3.5-8.5 cm wide, lateral lobes 2.5-7 cm long; leaf base broadly rounded to cordate, peltate margin length 1-3.5 cm; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface glabrous to hairy on veins; leaf lower surface densely hairy, rarely glaucous, densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with fimbriate margin. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 5-6 cm wide, 2-locular, entire fruit covered with glands. Ecology: Collected up to ca. 100 m altitude. An early successional tree species growing mainly in swamps. Distribution: Peninsular Thailand and Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. In Borneo it has been collected throughout the island. |
