Macaranga lowii King ex Hook.f. var. lowii

Small trees up to ca. 20 m tall and 30 cm dbh, reproductive from 2 m tall and 2 cm dbh. Twigs solid, hairy (short simple hairs). Stipules needle-like, crowded at the twig apex, usually semi-persistent, 5-10 mm long by 1-1.5 mm wide. Petioles sparsely to densely hairy, up to ca. 9 cm long. Leaves alternate, elliptic to obovate, 8.5-22 cm long by 3-8 cm wide, length/width-ratio 2.13-4; secondary veins 10-14, not ending in the margin (fading to looping); leaf base usually slightly cordate-auriculate; leaf margin with inconspicuous glands; leaf upper surface glabrous, with 2 basal nectary glands directly next to the petiole insertion; leaf lower surface usually hairy, densely gland dotted, without domatia. Staminate inflorescences not branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences not branched, sometimes with large leaf like bracteoles; fruits 10-12 mm wide, 2-locular, with spines.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 1500 m altitude. A shade tolerant forest understorey species, most common in primary forest, but also present in the understorey of secondary forests.

Distribution: Peninsular Thailand and Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo. In Borneo collected throughout the island.
