Macaranga kinabaluensis Airy Shaw Small trees up to ca. 22 m tall and 20 cm dbh, reproductive from 5 m tall and 5 cm dbh. Twigs solid, usually glabrous. Stipules ovate to triangular, early-caducous to semi-persistent, erect, not surrounding the twigs, 3-7 mm long by 1-2 mm wide. Petioles usually glabrous, up to ca. 10 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate, sometimes peltate, 8.5-17.5 cm long by 5.5-10.5 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.21-2.19; secondary veins 6-10, not ending in the margin; leaf base rounded to slightly cordate, peltate margin length (when present) 0.3-0.7 cm; leaf margin with inconspicuous glands; leaf upper surface glabrous, with or without 2-4 basal nectaries directly next to the petiole insertion; leaf lower surface usually glabrous, densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole, bracteoles with entire margins. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 4-5 mm wide, 2-locular, entire fruit covered by glands, with few short spines. Ecology: Collected up to ca. 2400 m altitude. Primary forest species. Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Sabah and East Kalimantan. |
