Macaranga indistincta Whitmore

Small trees up to ca. 15 m tall and 15 cm dbh, reproductive from 5 m tall and 4 cm dbh. Twigs hollow, ant inhabited, densely hairy (short simple hairs), with small ant openings (ca. 1 mm in diameter). Stipules broadly ovate, usually semi-persistent, recurved, (almost) surrounding the twig completely, 6-11 mm long by 8-13 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 23 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate, 3-lobed, 21-35 cm long by 15-25 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.08-1.53; secondary veins 12-17, ending in the margin; central lobe 9-15 cm long by 9-13 cm wide, lateral lobes 2-6.5 cm long; leaf base broadly rounded, peltate margin length 2.5-6 cm; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface glabrous; leaf lower surface densely hairy (velvety), sparsely to numerously gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with fimbriate margins. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 7-10 mm wide, 4-locular, one discrete glandular patch on each carpel wall developing into horn-like appendages.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 1000 m altitude. An early successional species growing at disturbed sites in primary forest and in secondary forests.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Sabah and East-Kalimantan.
