Small tree up to ca. 18 m tall and 20 cm dbh, reproductive from 1 m tall and 2 cm dbh. Twigs hollow, ant inhabited, glabrous to hairy (usually short and long simple hairs), with small ant openings (ca. 1 mm diameter). Stipules broad ovate, (early- to) semi-persistent, recurved, (almost) completely surrounding the twigs, 5-12 mm long by 5-12 mm wide. Petioles glabrous (to hairy), up to ca. 24 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate (rarely not peltate), usually unlobed, sometimes shallowly 3-lobed, 13-34 cm long by 5-23 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.28-2.6; secondary veins 9-18, usually not ending in the margin (looping); when 3-lobed, central lobe 12.5-14 cm long by 8.5-13 cm wide, lateral lobes 0.7-2.5 cm long; leaf base rounded, rarely cordate (only when not peltate), peltate margin length 0.2-4 cm; leaf margin with inconspicuous or no glands; leaf upper surface glabrous; leaf lower surface glabrous to hairy on veins, usually sparsely (to numerously) gland dotted.
