Macaranga havilandii Airy Shaw

Small tree up to ca. 6 m tall and 2.5 cm dbh, reproductive from 3 m tall and 1 cm dbh, usually forming small clumps of several slender stems arising from a single individual. Twigs hollow, ant inhabited, glabrous, usually glaucous, with small ant openings (ca. 1 mm diameter). Stipules broadly ovate, early- to semi-persistent, recurved, not surrounding the twig completely, 4-6 mm long by 4-6 mm wide. Petiole glabrous, up to ca. 29 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate, not or 3-5-lobed, 24-35 cm long by 15-22 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.09-1.74; secondary veins 10-14, ending in the margin; when 3-5-lobed, the central lobe 13-14 cm long by 5-11 cm wide, lateral lobes up to 8 cm long; leaf base rounded to truncate, peltate margin length 5-7 cm; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface glabrous; leaf lower surface glabrous, often glaucous, sparsely to numerously gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin; Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 8-11 mm wide, 4-5-locular, each carpel wall with one glandular patch.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 100 m altitude. Relatively shade tolerant species found mainly in primary forest near rivers or on small landslides. Usually growing on nutrient poor sandy humult ultisols.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has only been collected in Brunei and Sarawak.
