Macaranga fulva Airy Shaw

Shrub to small tree up to ca. 8 m tall and 5 cm dbh, reproductive from 5 m tall. Twigs solid, densely hairy (short and long simple hairs). Stipules needle-like, semi-persistent, erect, crowded at twig apex, 6-8 mm long by 0.5-1 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 2.5 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate to obovate, usually elliptic, 4.5-8.5 cm long by 2-4 cm wide, length/width-ratio 2-2.6; secondary veins 11-13, not ending in the margin (looping); leaf base slightly cordate; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface hairy on veins, with 2-4 basal nectary glands on basal veins near petiole insertion; leaf lower surface hairy, numerously gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences unknown but probably similar to those of Macaranga repando-dentata Airy Shaw. Pistillate inflorescences unbranched, with one terminal fruit enclosed by strongly enlarged bracteoles; fruits mm wide, 2-locular, with spines.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 150 m altitude. A shade-tolerant species of the forest understorey.

Distribution: An endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Sabah and East Kalimantan.

Note: This species is likely a synonym of Macaranga repando-dentata Airy Shaw, from which it only differs in the smaller leaves, shorter petioles and shorter pistillate inflorescences.
