Macaranga didymocarpa Whitmore Small trees to trees up to ca. 25 m tall and 25 cm dbh, reproductive from 4 m tall and 8 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (short simple hairs only). Stipules ovate to triangular, early caducous, erect to spreading, 5-6 mm long by 2-4 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to ca. 12 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate, peltate, 10-16 cm long by 7-11 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.14-1.71; secondary veins 8-11, ending in the margin or not (looping), basal secondary veins at almost perpendicular angle with midrib, upper secondary veins less so; leaf base rounded, peltate margin length 0.5-3.2 cm; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface usually hairy on veins; leaf lower surface hairy, glaucous, densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with fimbriate margins. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 6-8 mm wide, 2-locular, whole fruit covered by glands. Ecology: Collected up to ca. 200 m altitude. A (small) early successional tree found mainly on disturbed sites in primary and secondary forest. In (peat) swamps, along river sides and alluvial soils. Distribution: Endemic to Borneo, where it has been collected in Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak. |
