Macaranga calcicola Airy Shaw

Small tree up to ca. 10 m tall and 6 cm dbh, reproductive from 5 m tall and 4 cm dbh. Twigs hollow, ant inhabited, hairy, with small ant openings (ca. 1 mm diameter). Stipules broadly ovate, early- to semi-persistent, recurved, (almost) completely surrounding the twigs, 5-7 mm long by 7-10 mm wide. Petioles glabrous to hairy, up to 20 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate, 3-lobed, 12-24 cm long by 8-20 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1-1.23; secondary veins 8-10, ending in the margin; central lobe 6-9 cm long by 6.5-12 cm wide, lateral lobes 1.5-2.5 cm long; leaf base broadly rounded, peltate margin length 1.5-3.5 cm; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface glabrous; leaf lower surface glabrous to hairy on veins, not or only sparsely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin, not enclosing the staminate flowers completely. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 7-10 mm wide, 4(-5)-locular, with small glandular patch on each carpel wall.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 200 m altitude. A small early successional tree growing on limestone soils only.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo. Only found near the limestone formation of Bau in western Sarawak.
