Macaranga brevipetiolata Airy Shaw

Small trees up to ca. 25 m tall and 20 cm dbh, reproductive from 2 m tall and 3 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (simple hairs only). Stipules needle-like, crowded at twig apex, semi-persistent, 4-9 mm long by 0.5-1.5 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to 4.5 cm long. Leaves alternate, obovate, usually with strongly narrowed base, 7.5-26 cm long by 3.5-11 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.64-2.67, penniveined; secondary veins 9-14, not ending in the margin; leaf base not or only slightly cordate; leaf upper surface glabrous with hairy veins, with 2 basal nectary glands directly next to petiole insertion;  leaf lower surface densely hairy, densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences unbranched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences unbranched, with large leaf like bracteoles; fruits 11-14 mm wide, 2-locular, with spines.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 650 m altitude. A typical shade-tolerant forest understorey species. Mainly found in closed primary and secondary forests.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Brunei, Sarawak, Sabah, East-, Central-, and West-Kalimantan.
