Macaranga ashtonii S.J. Davies

Trees up to ca. 30 m tall and 30 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (simple hairs only), sometimes glaucous. Stipules broadly ovate, early caducous, erect to spreading to recurved, almost completely surrounding the twigs, 10-25 mm long by 8-20 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to 35 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate, 3-lobed, 25-60 cm long by 15-40 cm wide; secondary veins ending in the margin; central lobe 12.5-30 cm long and ca. 20 cm wide, lateral lobes ca. 10 cm long; leaf base broadly rounded, peltate margin length 4-9 cm; leaf margin with small conical glands; leaf upper surface glabrous or with some hairs on the veins; lower surface densely hairy, numerously gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 6-8 mm wide, 4-5-locular, glandular patch covering most of the carpel walls.

Ecology: Collected between 800 and 1300 m altitude. Growing in primary and secondary forests, on disturbed sites.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Sabah and Sarawak.
