Macaranga angulata S.J. Davies

Small tree up to ca. 17 m tall and 8 cm dbh, reproductive from 2 m tall and 7 cm dbh. Twigs hollow, ant inhabited, glabrous, with small ant openings (ca. 1 mm diameter). Stipules broadly ovate, semi-persistent, recurved, (almost) completely surrounding the twig, 9-11 mm long by 9-12 mm wide. Petioles glabrous, up to 23 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate, 3-5-lobed, 18-33 cm long by 18-32 cm wide, length/width-ratio 0.82-1.75; secondary veins 12-21, ending in the margin; central lobes 11-34 cm long by 6.5-12 cm wide, lateral lobes 5-14 cm long; leaf base broadly rounded to truncate, peltate margin length 1-4.5 cm; leaf margin usually with conspicuous glands; leaf upper surface usually glabrous, sometimes hairy on veins; leaf lower surface glabrous, sometimes hairy on veins, not or only sparsely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin, not completely enclosing the flowers. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 9-11 mm wide, 4-5-locular, with glandular patch on each carpel wall, sometimes developing into small horn-like appendages.

Ecology: Occurring between ca. 800 and 1500 m altitude. An early successional tree found in disturbed places in primary forest (gaps) and in secondary forests.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Brunei, Sarawak and Sabah.
