Macaranga baccaureifolia Airy Shaw

Small tree up to ca. 13 m tall and 20 cm dbh, reproductive from 4 m tall and 5 cm dbh. Twigs solid, densely hairy (simple hairs only). Stipules needle-like, crowded at the twig apex, semi-persistent, 4-9 mm long by 0.5-1.5 mm wide. Petioles densely hairy, up to 12 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate to elliptic, 14-21 cm long by 8-13 cm wide, length/width-ratio 1.33-2, (penni- to) tripliveined; secondary veins 8-12, ending in the margin; leaf base broadly cordate to auriculate; leaf upper surface hairy on veins, with no or 2 basal nectary glands on basal veins; leaf lower surface hairy, densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences unbranched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences unbranched, with one terminal fruit only enclosed by large bracteoles; fruits 15-23 mm wide, 2-locular, with few short spines.

Ecology: Collected up to 200 m altitude. A typical shade-tolerant forest understorey species. Mainly found in closed primary and secondary forests.

Distribution: Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. In Borneo known from Sabah, East- and West-Kalimantan.
