Latin for 'shiny'.

Very similar to Cryptocarya ferrea, possibly a synonym of that species.

Mid-canopy tree up to 40 m tall and 77 cm dbh. Stipules absent. Leaves alternate, simple, penni-veined, glabrous, slightly whitish below. Flowers ca. 4 mm diameter, yellowish, placed in panicles. Fruits ca. 10 mm long, blue-purple, fleshy drupes.

In undisturbed mixed dipterocarp and sub-montane forests up to 1400 m altitude. Usually on hillsides and ridges with sandy soils. Also often on limestone. In secondary forests usually present as a pre-disturbance remnant tree.

Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo (Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah, East-Kalimantan), Philippines.
