Description
Mid-canopy tree up to 33 m tall and 31 cm dbh. Stipules absent. Leaves in
whorls, simple, penni-veined, glabrous, whitish below. Flowers ca. 5 mm
diameter, white-yellow, placed in bundles. Fruits ca. 10 mm diameter, yellow,
fleshy drupes on enlarged disc-shaped flower base.
Ecology
In undisturbed mixed dipterocarp and swamp forests up to 400 m altitude.
Mostly on hillsides and ridges, but also on alluvial sites and along rivers.
Often found on or near limestone, or on sandy soils. In secondary forests
usually present as a pre-disturbance remnant tree.
Distribution
Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo (Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah,
East-Kalimantan).
Local names
Borneo: Medang gegawe, Medang sahung.
