Understorey tree up to 16 m tall and 28 cm dbh. Stipules ca. 6 mm long. Leaves opposite, but one of each pair stipule like and barely visible, simple, penni-veined, glabrous, base slightly peltate. Flowers ca. 5 mm diameter, reddish, placed in branched racemes. Fruits ca. 17 mm diameter, reddish, 3-lobed, dehiscent, spiny capsules.

In undisturbed mixed dipterocarp forests up to 400 m altitude. Usually on hillsides and ridges. In secondary forests usually present as a pre-disturbance remnant tree.

Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo (Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah, Central- and East-Kalimantan).
