Latin for 'reddish hairy rachis'.

Horsfieldia macrocoma var. rufirachis J.Sinclair

Upper canopy tree up to 42 m tall and 80 cm dbh. Stem with reddish sap. Stipules absent. Leaves alternate, simple, penni-veined, glabrous. Flowers ca. 2 mm diameter, yellow-reddish, placed in panicles. Fruits ca. 51 mm long, green-yellow, fleshy, dehiscent capsules. Seeds covered with 1/5 to 1/3 divided red aril.

In undisturbed mixed dipterocarp forests up to 300 m altitude. On hillsides and ridges, but also common along rivers and streams and alluvial sites. Usually on clay soils, but also on limestone. In secondary forests usually present as a pre-disturbance remnant.
